Department Overview
The Department carries out its mission by providing vocational rehabilitation and other vital services that provide access and independence to eligible Californians with disabilities.
DOR works with individuals of every type and category of disability. Rehabilitation counselors in the many DOR field offices work directly with the consumers.
The proposed annual budget for SFY 2012/2013 is approximately $421.3 million. There are about 1,884 authorized staff positions statewide, and approximately 115,000 consumers receive services annually.
The Department of Rehabilitation was established on October 1, 1963 in accordance with Chapter 1747, Statutes of 1963. The Department is part of the Health and Human Services Agency. The functions and responsibilities of the Department are contained in Sections 19000 - 19856 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code.
